tldr : STOP RECYCLING YOUR TIKTOK VIDEOS IN INSTAGRAM
A lot of you may have seen a shared post about the Instagram algorithm change and the ranking of engagement actions. SPOILER ALERT: THIS IS NOT NEW.
I too saw these posts from nearly every “influencer” and small business I follow and wanted to go to the source to investigate but could find no press release or news article coverage of this algorithm change.
Here’s what DID change about the algorithm (from Social Media Today):
“Instagram is not only now clearly advising against posting content that's 'visibly recycled from other apps', but it has also updated its algorithm to downrank such posts within the Reels tab and Explore.
Instagram's saying that users don't like all those TikTok re-shares, so it's looking to eliminate them by detecting visible watermarks and poor quality (i.e. blurry) re-shares. You can still share them if you want, as Instagram notes, and they'll still be seen by your followers. But if you want to reach a larger audience with your Reels, you'll probably want to avoid duplicating your TikTok clips.”
Prior to this update, Instagram also released information about functions its testing such as removing the ability to share posts to your stories, removing likes, and adding the ability to share Tweets in stories.
If you want to keep up with what’s happening in the social media world, I HIGHLY suggest subscribing to Today in Digital Marketing podcast. It’s 10 minutes a day and gives you an overview of what’s going on in the world of digital marketing.
